San Francisco Magazine - Treasure Island
Treasure Island, a manmade sprawl of 400 acres in the middle of San Francisco Bay, recently found itself in the news when Google began building a mysterious barge along one of its piers. But intrigue around the project obscured something far more interesting: the mystery of Treasure Island itself.
At a time when downtown San Francisco is exploding with growth and tech dollars, this gorgeous but blighted piece of land represents a fascinating exception. To visit this strange realm is to walk in on a palpable limbo, somewhere between the windswept, underpopulated ex-Navy base of today and an aspirational aqua-urban dreamscape of the not-too-distant future. Big changes are coming, and the only certainty most residents have is that they’ll be total.
